From the First Woman Physician to Today

In 1849, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in the United States to earn a medical degree—opening the door to generations of women physicians who would follow. Her courage and determination paved the way for women to practice medicine, lead institutions, and transform health care.

Today, women physicians stand on that legacy, serving in every specialty and setting—clinics, hospitals, academic medicine, research, and leadership—continuing to advance the art and science of healing.
