TCMS President's Letter

1936 was a significant year in Oklahoma. It is often considered the final year of the Dust Bowl era. This is the year actors Alan Alda, Burt Reynolds, Larry Hovis, Dennis Hopper, and Louis Gossett Jr. were born. Franklin Roosevelt and his "New Deal" were well underway in efforts to reverse the Great Depression. In major league baseball, a different "subway series" had concluded with the New York Yankees defeating the New York Giants for the World Series title.

Additionally, it represented one of the hottest years on record for Tulsa. In fact, 1936 notched a remarkable 65 days above 100 degrees. The most we have had in this century was 44 days above 100 degrees in 2011, which ranks 6th on the "all-time" list. As we begin a long stretch of hot summer days in Tulsa, we must consider the impact on our community. Heat-related illnesses are being recognized in greater numbers than in the past. There are multiple possible causes for this change, but one thing is for sure: it is very hot during Oklahoma summers!

I tend to carry several bottled waters in my car during the summer as a safety precaution. You never know when the need may arise. Additionally, I try to take a moment to notice those around me, particularly those who work outside. Please be safe and look out for one another! I encourage each of you to take some time to relax and recharge during this season, as self-care is essential for maintaining our well-being and providing the best care for our patients.

This July, TCMS and OSMA are working on a membership promotion for non-members. Several postcards will be going out to all non-member physicians in Tulsa County over the next few months letting them know about our organizations, the benefits of membership, and impact we have on healthcare in Tulsa and around the state.

The first postcard titled “support is here” highlights the definition (sup·port) n. encourage, comfort, help, sustain; to maintain or advocate; to corroborate. A QR code takes them to a webpage where they can learn more about TCMS and OSMA. With other postcards in following months to highlight the Physician Wellness Program “wellness is here”, Networking & Social Events “networking is here”, CME “education is here”, and more. We’ll also send a letter inviting them to join at a discounted rate for New Members which can only be used once.

If a colleague or friend mentions these postcards or letter, I know you will encourage them to join and become a member. Your encouragement and involvement not only benefits you personally and professionally but also contributes to the collective strength and impact of our organization. I look forward to welcoming new members and continuing to grow our community of dedicated healthcare professionals.

As we embark on our summer travels and adventures, let us remember to prioritize safety and well-being at all times. Whether you are exploring new destinations or enjoying a staycation, I hope you make memories that last for years to come. Additionally, I would like to remind you to consider attending or supporting the upcoming Project TCMS Fundraiser on August 3rd.

Your participation and contributions can make a meaningful impact and help us come together to support a worthy cause. Let us continue to prioritize health, safety, and community engagement as we navigate through the summer season.
